Ingredients You’ll Need

Serves 4–6

For the Dish:

  • 1 lb ground beef (or sliced beef strips for a fancier touch)
  • 3 large onions , thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp olive oil (or butter, divided)
  • 3 cloves garlic , minced
  • 4 cups beef broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp dried thyme (or 1 tbsp fresh thyme)
  • Salt and pepper , to taste
  • 8 oz egg noodles
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese (or mozzarella for a milder flavor)

Optional Garnish:

  • Fresh parsley, chopped

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Caramelize the Onions

  1. Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil (or butter) in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, for 20–25 minutes , or until golden brown and caramelized. Remove the onions from the pan and set aside.

Step 2: Cook the Beef

  1. In the same skillet, add the remaining olive oil (or butter). Increase the heat to medium-high and add the ground beef (or beef strips). Cook until browned, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon if using ground beef. Drain excess fat if needed.
  2. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute, until fragrant.

Step 3: Build the Flavor Base

  1. Return the caramelized onions to the skillet with the beef. Add the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper. Stir to combine and bring the mixture to a simmer.

Step 4: Cook the Noodles

  1. Add the egg noodles to the skillet and cook for 8–10 minutes , or until the noodles are tender and most of the liquid has been absorbed. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
