Ingredients You’ll Need
Serves 4–6
For the Dish:
- 1 lb ground beef (or sliced beef strips for a fancier touch)
- 3 large onions , thinly sliced
- 2 tbsp olive oil (or butter, divided)
- 3 cloves garlic , minced
- 4 cups beef broth
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp dried thyme (or 1 tbsp fresh thyme)
- Salt and pepper , to taste
- 8 oz egg noodles
- 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese (or mozzarella for a milder flavor)
Optional Garnish:
- Fresh parsley, chopped
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Caramelize the Onions
- Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil (or butter) in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, for 20–25 minutes , or until golden brown and caramelized. Remove the onions from the pan and set aside.
Step 2: Cook the Beef
- In the same skillet, add the remaining olive oil (or butter). Increase the heat to medium-high and add the ground beef (or beef strips). Cook until browned, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon if using ground beef. Drain excess fat if needed.
- Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute, until fragrant.
Step 3: Build the Flavor Base
- Return the caramelized onions to the skillet with the beef. Add the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper. Stir to combine and bring the mixture to a simmer.
Step 4: Cook the Noodles
- Add the egg noodles to the skillet and cook for 8–10 minutes , or until the noodles are tender and most of the liquid has been absorbed. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
